Homework Tips for Week 4

Solving Inequalities

Solve the inequality just like an equation, but if we multiply or divide by a negative we need to reverse the inequality sign.

When we graph inequalities, a solid dot includes the exact point, an open circle excludes the exact point.

Polynomials

Addition... combine like terms, don't touch exponents

Subtraction... a minus sign in front of a parenthesis indicates that we CHANGE EVERY sign in the parenthesis and then combine like terms

Subtract From... the expression after the "from" needs to be first then subtract the other expression in parentheses
Ex. Subtract 2x - 5 from 6x + 1 = 6x + 1 -(2x - 5) = 6x + 1 - 2x
+ 5 = 4x + 6

Multiplication

A monomial times a monomial... multiply coefficients and add exponents

A monomial times a polynomial... use distributive property and multiply

A binomial times a binomial... use FOIL

For examples and further explanation see: student tutorials- multiplying binomials

(2x+ 1)2... remember to put in expanded form and then FOIL
Ex. (2x+1)(2x+1) = 4x
2+4x+1
